Victoria’s recently reintroduced Target 155 water consumption target is a taxpayerfunded waste of time, says Sustainable Australia MP Clifford Hayes.
The previously axed initiative encourages Melburnians to limit their water usage to 155 litres per day.
However, Mr Hayes says the program is “rubbish” and “a waste of time”, given that any reduction by individual Melburnians to limit water usage will be rendered futile by the Government’s agenda of rapid population growth.
“Once again, our Government is asking us to get by with less so we can have more… More people,” Mr Hayes said.
“We’re adding more than 2,000 people to our city every week, and yet this Government passes the buck to us while ignoring the real crisis.
“Any hard work undertaken by individuals to meet this regime is simply going to be washed away by this Government’s obsession with rapid population growth. “This is tax-payer funded hypocrisy.”
Mr Hayes said if the State Government was serious about limiting water usage, it would convene with its Federal counterparts to introduce a proper scheme to limit the consumption of our resources.
“What we really need is Target 70,000,” Mr Hayes added. “We need to lower immigration from the record 200,000 plus, back to the long-term average of 70,000.
“Instead of trying to sacrifice our way of life and build our way out of Victoria’s issues, this is how we’ll alleviate our water woes.
