After writing to the Federal Environment Minister about the proposed Mordialloc Freeway, Sustainable Australia MP Clifford Hayes has expressed his utmost disappointment with the Minister’s decision to approve the project. “I am extremely disappointed that this project has been allowed to proceed,” Mr Hayes said. “The decision shows a complete disregard for the significance of the Ramsar-listed Edithvale Wetlands, the Braeside Park Wetlands, the endangered species living there and the community’s concerns. “This pristine ecosystem is going to be desecrated for a project that will have little impact on congestion. “All that this project is going to achieve is shifting the existing bottleneck from the end of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Springvale Road to the end of the freeway, at the Dingley Bypass.” Mr Hayes agrees that the Government has not seriously investigated alternative road upgrades. He said it is yet another example of “the Government trying to build its way out of congestion.” “Government-sponsored population growth is the elephant in the room,” Mr Hayes added.
